C.     The Format

The West Coast Rumble ASL Tournament is a 4-Round "Swiss Style" Tournament, in which players will play an opponent who has a Win/Loss record the same as them in each round. The Swiss Style is not the same as the Single Elimination, commonly known as the “Final Four” Format; in which there will be one undefeated player in the end. In the Swiss Style format, players will play all the rounds and the winner will be determined by the player with the highest total of points

(1) For the initial round of the tournament, the players are seeded as follows:

a)  The players are put on a list with the player with the highest AREA Rating on top of the list and the player with the lowest ASL Rating at the bottom (see Appendix A for seeding Unrated Players);

b)  The order of players with equal rating is determined randomly;

c)  The list is split in two (cut in the middle) and the player on top of one list is paired with the player on top of the other, #2 with #2 on the other list, and so on

Tournament Pairings

1st Seed v. 9th Seed
2nd Seed v. 10th Seed
3rd Seed v. 11th Seed
4th Seed v. 12th Seed
5th Seed v. 13th Seed
6th Seed v. 14th Seed
7th Seed v. 15th Seed
8th Seed v. 16th Seed

(2) After the first round, players are paired based on their Win/Loss record; In a 16 player field:

a)      After Round 1, there will be 8x 1-0 and 8x 0-1

b)      After Round 2, there will be 4x 2-0, 8x 1-1, & 4x 0-2

c)       After Round 3, there will be 2x 3-0, 4x 2-1, 4x 1-2, & 1x 0-3

d)      After Round 4, there will be 1x 4-0, 3x 3-1, 8x 2-2, 3x 1-3, & 1x 0-4

e)       If a round should have an uneven amount of players at the same record, the lowest seeded player of that record will play the highest  seeded player of the lower record.

f)       As all 4 rounds will be played in the tournament; in Round 4, the 3-0 player will play the highest seeded 2-1 player; the remaining 2-1 the highest 1-2, etc.

(3) The Winner of the Tournament will be the player with the Highest Point Total at the end of the tournament. Points are awarded as follows:

a)      10 points for every win that player has at the end of the tournament. In cases where your opponent Forfeits a match or a player receives a Bye in a round, that round always counts as a win for that player;

b)      1 Bonus point for every win that player's defeated opponents have at the end of the tournament; and

c)       The point total of all the tied players’ opponents will be compared to determine final ranking.

(4) The Final Rankings are based on the player's point totals in the tournament. Any ties in the Final Ranking will be broken as follows:

a)      Head to head play. Did you defeat that player in the tournament?

b)      The point total of the tied players defeated opponents will be compared to determine final ranking

D. Rules

In any game, disputes will occur between players, the West Coast Rumble is no exception. The following rules are meant to reduce any misinterpretation, disagreement, or otherwise, not every conceivable situation is covered. The players are first required to make an effort to settle it between themselves, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, but the final decision is held with the Tournament Director.

The West Coast Rumble tournament uses the official ASL 2nd Edition Rules, players are to consider and agree on ALL Optional rules before making scenario choices (E.g. IIFT, BI, PF usage etc...). Any variable scenario information (E.g. VCs, Bore Sighted hexes, etc...) will be written down on a side record for verification.

E. Setup

a) Players are to verify their opponent's OB and the orientation of the map boards before setup begins.

b) Players are to ask their opponent if he has considered all setup restrictions for HIP units before setup

c) Verify the legal setup of all non-HIP units before the game begins. All HIP units will have their locations written on a side record for verification.

d) If a player has violated setup restrictions after play has commenced, any illegally setup units WILL be removed from play.

NOTE: these rules are meant to ensure a fair playing of the scenario chosen. They are NOT intended to be a vehicle for unethical play. Please make sure that both players are aware of the OB and setup restrictions. If you are aware of an error in the OBs or in your opponent’s setup, you MUST make this error known to your opponent.

F. Rules Disputes

Any rules dispute should be:

a) Resolved first by the players involved

b) If players cannot agree on a rule, the Tournament Staff will decide on the rule in question

c) Any decisions by the Tournament Staff are final!

G. Kibitizing

To give unsolicited or unwanted advice; make unhelpful or idle comments, especially to someone playing a game – will not be tolerated! Absolutely no comments on any game in progress!

a) Dice-cup,

b) Dice-tower,

c) Box top; or

Whatever the method used, your opponent must be able to see the result at the same time that you are. There will be no free-range dice rolling on the boards/table.

J. Deciding Games
If two players are unable to finish a game within the allotted time, they have to decide the outcome of the scenario, using one of these three methods:

a) Mutual agreement, i.e. the players agree on a winner

b) Roll the dice! (Low dice wins)

c) Let the Organizers decide the game

K. Adjudication
If the players cannot agree on a result, or if at least one of the players does not want to roll the dice for the victory, then the TD will decide the match.
